Located in the Italian Riviera is Albisola, a small seaside village that has been making ceramics since the late 16th century. In addition to its artistic offerings, Albisola is a charming destination for travellers seeking a taste of authentic Italian coastal life. With its colourful houses, lively marketplaces and mouth-watering seafood restaurants, the village offers a delightful break from the hustle and bustle of cities like nearby Genoa and Savona.

Although you may have never heard of Albisola until this article, you may be surprised to know that Albisola is one of the most recognized names when it comes to ceramics, with its artistry being a reflection of the region’s time-honoured crafting tradition.

The signature style, Antico Savona, features the iconic blue and white finish with intricate designs inspired by local motifs, such as the sea and the surrounding nature. The result is a visually stunning yet subtle piece of functional art that can blend seamlessly with virtually any decor.

What sets Ceramiche San Giorgio Albisola apart is its rich history of collaborations with notable artists. The studio has been a mecca for artists since the mid-20th century, attracting prominent names like Asger Jorn and Wilfredon Lam. The collaboration with Wilfredon Lam gave birth to three-dimensional artworks that transformed his paintings into something truly remarkable. Today, the tradition of artistic collaborations still thrives at Ceramiche San Giorgio Albisola, with contemporary artists like Alfonso Borghi and brands such as Lamborghini working with the studio to create marvellous one-of-a-kind pieces.

As a photographer and lover of artisans, I was drawn to Albisola and Ceramiche San Giorgio for their unique blend of artistry, history and craftsmanship. It was fascinating to watch the Poggi brothers, Matteo and Giovanni, at work, shaping and creating each piece from scratch with incredible attention to detail, especially Giovanni who recently turned 90. As I spoke with the Poggi brothers during my visit to the studio, it became evident that they are continuing to use their studio as a platform for emerging artists and the development of ceramic as a medium. They shared with me his favourite upcoming project, which I cannot reveal yet but promises to be a masterpiece.

To my surprise, I not only left with a newfound appreciation for fine ceramics but also with some groceries, fresh tomatoes from Giovanni’s garden which were perfect for a bruschetta I made afterwards. Visiting this studio has been a truly unforgettable experience that I would recommend to anyone interested in history, art, or simple beauty. If you’re looking for quality ceramics that embody the beauty of traditional Italian craftsmanship, Ceramiche San Giorgio Albisola is the answer. Their timeless pieces will not only add a touch of elegance to your home but also serve as lasting heirlooms for generations to come.
