It was the year 2002 and a young 22-year-old Christopher was excited to be out with a few of his friends for drinks. After 20 minutes of light conversation and perusing the drinks menu, I ordered a drink I never heard of before. It had a Caribbean-themed name, it sounded fun so why not. It wasn’t until I saw the waiter returning with the drinks for me and my friends I found something that looked… well… not like what I wanted. The drink wasn’t the issue but the glassware used was. It was the sexiest shaped glass on the table, even more so than the ones the ladies were drinking from. Of course, as a young testosterone-filled man, drinking from such a glass left me feeling anything but masculine. From that day I made it my business to know the drinks I ordered and more so the type of glassware that would add to the experience.
Choosing the right glassware can make all the difference in the drinking experience, especially if you want to enjoy your drinks like a true gentleman. It isn’t simply about looking cool, it’s about enhancing the taste, aroma, and overall enjoyment of your drink. So let’s dive into the different types of glasses you should have in your collection or ensure are used while at your favorite watering hole.
First on the list is the traditional rocks glass, commonly referred to as an old-fashioned glass. Perfect for ice-filled cocktails like whiskey and bourbon. Its short, sturdy design makes it easy to grip, and its wide rim allows you to take in the spirit’s aroma while the thick base keeps the drink chilled.
Up next we have the highball glass. It is ideal for mixed drinks that include soda or other carbonated beverages since it is tall and narrow. With each sip, a reviving effervescence is produced by the bubbles rising to the top of the glass due to its height.
If you’re out and feeling fancy, feeling for a more refined experience, a stemmed glass is the way to go. A snifter glass is ideal for sipping brandy or cognac, while a martini glass is perfect for a classic gin or vodka martini. Holding up your pinky while sipping is optional.
Even though I’m not a lover of beer I cannot forget about my fellow beer drinkers. Beer connoisseurs should not overlook the importance of choosing the right glass for their favorite brew. The classic pint glass is the go-to choice for serving beer, but if you’re sipping on a fancy brew like a Belgian wit or an IPA, enjoy it from a tulip or a snifter glass, respectively. Trust me, it’ll make that beer taste even better.
That’s it, gentlemen. When enjoying a drink, don’t settle for just any old glass. Especially, if you’re enjoying your favorite dram at home, make it elegant. Cheers!
