To Be Truly Elegant One Should Not Be Noticed

Meet Mr. Nick Neghina (@nickneghina), a creative writer from Sibiu, one of the most charming medieval cities in Romania, currently on an entrepreneurial journey in the pen industry where he takes care of visual and written content for high-end writing instruments.

Nick, what does it mean for you to be a Modern Gentleman?

Reading the question, a quote of Beau Brummell comes to mind “To be truly elegant one should not be noticed”. Although he was referring to style, Brummell’s statement is also relevant when speaking of the modern gentleman. For me, the modern gentleman dresses elegantly, but he does it effortlessly. His good manners should only be seen as normal behaviour and any act of kindness he does is done in silence without drawing attention. A gent should also have a signature scent that makes him unmistakable and, of course, a unique handwriting style.

When it comes to style, where do you mostly get your inspiration from?

It all started with the classic films such as The Great Gatsby, Roman Holiday, The Sicilian Clan and The talented Mr. Ripley, to mention only a few cinematic masterpieces that influenced my style over the years. Then, my passion for tailored garments led me to magazines and books about style. But I have to admit that sometimes the most authentic sources of inspiration are simply around us, on the street, in a café, in a bar or at the opera…

What’s your personal style signifier?

I’d say it’s my polished shoes, but I’m not so sure about that because most people don’t pay much attention to those details. Anyway, if there’s anything people know me for, it’s definitely my tortoiseshell glasses or my hand-rolled pocket squares.

What are your favorite wardrobe essentials?

I am particularly fond of Oxford shoes, that’s why I’ll start by mentioning them first. I think that a beautiful pair of cap toe Oxfords shouldn’t be missing from anyone’s wardrobe. It’s simply timeless and can be worn in so many different contexts. Secondly, I like crisp white shirts with different types of collars and for me: the more the better. To be honest, any garment that comes in navy blue, grey, beige or earthy tones in general, instantly becomes my favourite. I forgot to mention my affinity for peak lapel blazers. It’s quite difficult not to fall for this type of lapel and I’m pretty sure that any connoisseur agrees on this.

What are your main passions and how do you cultivate them?

My main passion is writing instruments. I spend most of my time discovering different kinds of pens, writing about them and testing them, when possible of course. Some people might think there’s nothing spectacular about a fountain pen, for example. But if you look closely at every detail, if you dare to understand the craftsmanship behind, it’s truly fascinating. Lately I’ve had the opportunity to see some of the most impressive writing instruments in the world and I’m glad to share some with you. Besides writing instruments, I really enjoy photography and cooking and try to do both in my spare time.

Tell us what can never miss in your liquor cabinet?

I’m a man with simple needs when it comes to alcohol. And I must admit that I drink quite rarely. But my liquor cabinet is always stocked with Campari, Vermouth and Gin, as one of my favorite drinks is the classic Negroni.
