A Trip Back to the Gentlemen of the French Chanson
Ever since I was a little boy, my family used to play French songs all day long around the house. Being the son of a Spanish mother who grew up in France, my musical backdrop was quite different from what my school friends experienced. It made me feel special. As I grew older, these singers became more than just background music. They were cherished memories of my family. Delving into their biographies, I started to admire their personal style, sensitivity, and that unmistakable gentlemanly flair they exuded.
A Vintage Timepiece and the Stories It Tells
When I first held it in my hand, I was shell-shocked. The 1972 Rolex Submariner was from my father-in-law-to-be, a gift he received nearly 40 years ago from graduating West Point that same year – and the insane thing is, he never wore it. Not because he deemed it too precious or reserved it only for special occasions, but – get this – because it was too…heavy.
Words. Workouts. And Wellbeing.
Exercise is something I’ve always avoided. I’ve put it down to wanting more time to write. To be-
ing self aware. “I’m just not that guy who exercises.” But after flirting with exercise over recent
months, I’ve been forced to reconsider.
Unfortunately, I’ve found my writing is more productive after a workout. I’m more engaged in the
process after a cold shower. And I can write for longer if I limit myself to black coffee and clean
food.
