I bet many of you guys out there can relate - we are going constantly racing through the weeks; full-time job, parenthood, friends, a loving family, exercise, you need a good 7-8 hours of sleep – all things that we wish to make time for – but there is still only 24 hours a day and 7 days per week.

It was the year 2002 and a young 22-year-old Christopher was excited to be out with a few of his friends for drinks. After 20 minutes of light conversation and perusing the drinks menu, I ordered a drink I never heard of before. It had a Caribbean-themed name, it sounded fun so why not. It wasn’t until I saw the waiter returning with the drinks for me and my friends I found something that looked… well… not like what I wanted. The drink wasn’t the issue but the glassware used was.

I have briskly strode the streets of Old San Juan on many occasions, I have sauntered through them but once. This 500-year-old city can be just as easy to hate as it is to love. If you only look at the surface, the city’s whimsy runs no deeper than the pastel paint adorning its Spanish colonial buildings. To truly love La Ciudad Amurallada, one must first scale its stone walls and look beyond its many blemishes; and, frankly, this is impossible to achieve without first surrendering to “island time.”

Below the blue. Above the grain. Between the sticks.

It’s a peace that I haven’t experienced in some time. Not since I lived on the farm, deep in the roots of the English countryside. Encompassed by the dry, sun-drenched odour of the earth. Moved only by the breeze that carries the promise of a summer harvest. Serenaded by the background sound of nature.
