Musings on the Arctic Monkeys’ album “The Car”

It’s been about a year since The Arctic Monkeys released The Car - and it’s been about a year since it began repeating like a scratched record in my mind. After the deconstruction of the idea of  The (old) Arctic Monkeys that began with Tranquility Base Hotel and Casino, in this album they have perfected what that experiment began.

Watches have always brought me peace. Not because of the attention they draw or the feeling of luxury they instill. Rather, for the simple reason that they, through everything the wearer goes through, remain the silent observer.

Glasses, grasped by the hands of both the pauper and the king: it has been so from the earliest days of civilization; indeed, the very liquid is to some extent the maker of civilization. From the lips of the drinkers, myths, legends, folklore and philosophy have flowed. Phoenicians, Greeks and Romans alike built a lifestyle from this very commodity. Thus from a vine, the rich, aromatic, opulent language of man has grown.

Everything Matters and I Don’t Know Why

When my father palmed me a copy of On The Road he said, “I don’t know why, but I think you’re going to like this.” Whether he thought it would change my life or not, I don’t know. But I like to think he knew what he was doing, because until that point I hadn’t thought much of reading or writing, and I’ve been writing ever since.
