New York, Miami, Los Angeles—these are the names that often come to mind when one thinks of the United States of America. However, tucked away on the South Carolina coast lies a city that whispers history and charm at every cobblestone turn. With its European-style side alleys, stunning French and British architecture, charming carriage tours, and warm southern hospitality, Charleston deserves a place on your bucket list!

After living in the U.S. for the past four years, three of them in Charleston, I can confidently say this southern coastal gem is far more than a must-see. The Holy City attracts millions of tourists each year and has received Travel + Leisure’s Best American City award twelve years in a row. That’s no coincidence.

As a European, Charleston feels like home away from home: think charming, colorful buildings, prestigious churches (it’s called the Holy City for a reason), and walkable streets, something uncommon in most American cities. And add to that an incredible mix of local southern ingredients with a refined European sprinkle.

Leon’s? That’s where you’ll find me.

If you’re a cocktail lover—or even just an occasional drinker—Charleston also has you covered. From sophisticated drinks served in century-old buildings to modern French-inspired cocktail bars tucked into bustling streets, the options are infinite. My go-to? It has to be La Cave.

While other cities feel the need to sprint, Charleston’s attitude represents a gentler approach to modernity with a meticulous attention to its roots. Fun fact: the city has a height restriction on buildings—nothing can be taller than the highest church in town. Isn’t that fantastic?

Downtown is divided into three main areas. The most touristy is the French Quarter. My favorite is hands down South of Broad. Broad Street cuts across the lower part of the peninsula horizontally and separates the city’s three neighborhoods, and south of it feels like stepping back in time.

Late-night walks, early morning runs, or slow afternoon aperitivos are some of my favorite ways to immerse myself in its beauty. There aren’t many businesses in this part of town—residents like it that way—but you’ll still find good spots. Sorelle, an elevated Italian restaurant, will delight your palate with some fresh-caught fish and carefully crafted Italian recipes. Just a couple of blocks down, the creative owner of Le Chambertin will serve up some amazing, daily baked pastries.

I have visited almost every major city in the States, and yet, the Holy City still holds the gold medal. While I could go on forever about why Charleston is so magical, I will let you find out for yourself. And don’t forget to hop on one of the many carriage tours… It’s worth every penny!
