“April in Paris, chestnuts in blossom… this is a feeling no one can ever reprise” sang Sarah Vaughan, Ella Fitzgerald, and Billie Holiday in the classic jazz standard. Spring in the French capital is one of those clichés that turn out to be true.

The season begins in the very first days of March, when the trees burst into bloom in the gardens of the Palais-Royal. As temperatures gently rise, café terraces begin to fill, bringing the city back to life: a sunlit Saint-Germain spritz, a crisp gin infused with herbs, the bitter edge of a Negroni at dusk, or simply a matcha on a crowded terrace.

The weather is perfect for a stroll through the narrow streets of Le Marais or along the banks of the Seine. Still, watch out for the giboulées, those brief, sudden showers so common in March. As the sun sets, let’s wander in Saint-Germain-des-Prés to soak up its nighttime pulse. You might glimpse the ghosts of Juliette Gréco and Miles Davis stepping out of a basement jazz club.

The image of a hedonistic springtime Paris in modern culture has its roots in the artists of the “Lost Generation” of the 1920s, hanging out in the cafés of Montparnasse. As Ernest Hemingway wrote in A Moveable Feast, “When spring came, even the false spring, there were no problems except where to be happiest.” Between the 1930s and the 1950s, Hollywood continued to embody the romance and elegance of the city in films like An American in Paris or Funny Face. Nowadays, Woody Allen’s Midnight in Paris or, more recently, the Netflix series Emily in Paris keep the glamorous image of the French capital in full bloom, as if the city itself were always in springtime.

So, why might spring be the best time to be in Paris? Indeed, this season marks a sense of renewal for its residents. Winters here are often grey, windy, and rainy, so when the first rays of sunshine appear, people instinctively feel the urge to step outside and embrace life again. From a stylistic point of view, the milder temperatures make it possible to shed heavy coats and winter layers in favor of lighter jackets and more vibrant pieces, the emblem of Parisian chic.

Spring in Paris is more than a season: it’s a celebration of life, art, and style, where every street, café, and gallery invites you to savor the city at its most vibrant. It’s in these fleeting months that the timeless charm of the French capital feels at its most alive.
