Meet Mr. Tom O’Dell (@odellsstudios), men’s costumier for film and television, art director and stylist from Camberwell, London.

Tom, what does it mean for you to be a Modern Gentleman?

To be open to new ideas, opinions and ways of thinking. It’s important to appreciate life, your friends, family and work life. I feel lucky to be a modern man.

When it comes to style, where do you mostly get your inspiration from?

I work in costume for film and television so constantly surrounded by clothes, references and images. I specialise in 20th century period menswear so always have influences from photos of the past, scenes of London, imagery of clothing and everything in between.

What’s your personal style signifier?

Vintage coats and a good watch are my passion. I’ve built up a beautiful collection of vintage coats over the past 10 years, around 30 and counting many of which date from the 50’s and 60’s. Watches is another vice, I’ve purchased them from all over Europe, from Rome to Paris and a good handful from dealers in London.

What are your favorite wardrobe essentials?

I love a good pair of shoes. My daily go to is either a pair of paraboots or a penny loafer. Both can be worn with a trouser or Jean which suits my style.

What are your main passions and how do you cultivate them?

Over the past 4 years I’ve taken a deeper interest in gardening. I’m lucky enough to have a front and sunny back garden here in London and I’ve enjoyed learning about plants, vegetables and flowers and using this knowledge to help create a small but perfectly formed garden over the past few years.

Tell us what can never miss in your liquor cabinet?

I have a mid century drinks cabinet in my house which is always stocked with a inventory of spirits alongside a nice collection of vintage glassware, from 1920’s tumblers to 1950’s Champaign glasses I have acquired the taste for a good Japanese whisky over the past few years and always make sure I have a good bottle to hand.
